Renovation costs, Australia
How much does a bedroom renovation cost in Australia?
The figures below price a 12 m² bedroom floor in eight interior styles, plus two coats of paint across 28 m² of walls, a style-matched light and real bed and furnishing picks from Australian suppliers. Each total comes straight from the costing engine behind the TuttoCasa app: tiles by the box with wastage built in, adhesive, grout, paint and laying labour at dry-area rates.

What is included: an example schedule
Here is the full line-item schedule behind the Warm Minimalist figure above. Covers floor tiling, grout, adhesive, wall paint at two coats, a style-matched light and real furnishing picks including the bed. Removal of old carpet, subfloor preparation and electrical work are excluded.
On a tighter budget?
The same engine can work to a number. Give it a budget and it swaps the dearest tile lines for honest cheaper alternates, smaller formats or ceramic instead of porcelain, then steps the labour band down a tier if it still needs to. Asked to bring the Warm Minimalist bedroom in at $4,495, it lands at $4,556, saving $733 against the standard schedule (the closest it can get with real products). The swapped lines are flagged as budget picks so nothing is hidden.
The costs that catch people out
Demolition and skip bins
Strip-out labour plus bin hire. Allow $800 to $1,500 for a wet area, less for a dry room.
Waterproofing
Mandatory in wet areas under the NCC. Allow $500 to $900 for a bathroom, $300 to $500 for a laundry.
Contingency, 15 to 20%
Walls and floors hide things: out-of-level slabs, old leaks, surprise plumbing. Price it in up front, not after.
Lead times
Imported stone and feature tiles run 3 to 6 weeks. Order when the schedule is locked, not when demolition starts.
Frequently asked questions
Tiles in a bedroom? Really?
Increasingly, yes, especially timber-look and stone-look porcelain in warmer parts of Australia. It is durable, allergy-friendly and cool in summer. If you prefer carpet or timber, treat the floor line in the schedule as your flooring allowance.
What drives the difference between styles?
Two things: the per-square-metre price of each style's floor tile, and the furnishings. A Neo-Deco scheme carries dressier lighting and furniture picks than a Warm Minimalist one, and that shows up in the total.
How long does a bedroom renovation take?
With no structural work: a day to strip the old floor coverings, one to two days of laying for 12 m², a day for painting, then furniture. Allow a week end to end once materials are on site, and order tiles 3 to 6 weeks ahead.
Are these prices GST inclusive?
No, all figures are AUD ex-GST. Add 10 per cent for GST and keep a 15 to 20 per cent contingency for the things the carpet was hiding.
